DAN GREGORY ON BARBERING AND BEYOND
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB?
My first job was a paper round when I was around 13/14 years old.
WHY DID YOU DECIDE ON A CAREER IN BARBERING?
I absolutely loved going to the barbershop when I was younger. The smell, the camaraderie and just the overall vibe. It was never something I dreamed of doing.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I was offered a Saturday job at my local barbers (Ian Harrold’s Traditions Barber Shop) and because of my love for going to the barbershop it was a no-brainer to take the offer. Then I was offered an apprenticeship at the same place.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE TO DATE?
My biggest challenge was working at a men’s grooming salon that shut down unexpectedly. None of the staff had been made aware of anything so one day we were working and literally the next it was closed and we were unemployed.
WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?
The best piece of advice was “be nice to people on the way up as you will meet them on the way down”.
WHAT DO YOU WISH YOU’D KNOWN THEN THAT YOU KNOW NOW?
That every decision I made in my career would pay off.
WHAT'S BEEN YOUR GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT SO FAR?
I would say it’s being fully booked for over 6 months in advance.
WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR YOU NOW?
Me and my wife are building our haircare range, Jacovèus Botanicals, so we’re really excited to be on this journey together and see where it takes us.
