Barbershops continue to shine as the standout category in the hair and beauty sector, according to the latest National Hair & Beauty Federation (NHBF) bulletin. With a five-year growth of 5,791 units, barbershops are the fastest-growing retail category on the high street, reflecting the booming demand for men’s grooming services. This growth trajectory continued in H1 2024, with barbers showing remarkable stability in occupancy, especially in high streets and out-of-town locations.
Notable brands such as Gould Barbers and Ted’s Grooming Room are spearheading this growth, with Gould Barbers expanding by +45 units since 2019. Meanwhile, new entrants like Guy & Beard are making their mark in the market, further boosting the sector’s dynamic landscape.
Vacancy rates for barbershops have remained steady, a testament to the resilience of the sector. The focus on medium-sized high streets is driving expansion, highlighting the spread of barbering services into smaller town centres. Independent businesses dominate the category, representing 99% of the market, though some multiples are emerging, showing the strength and maturity of the sector.
Caroline Larissey, Chief Executive of the NHBF, says: “Despite an unbelievably challenging context our sector is growing, albeit very slowly for hair, so to see these figures for barbershops and professional grooming services is refreshing. Barbers are an integral part of all our communities, providing a hub for social interaction as well as a break from the pressures of everyday life, encouraging greater well-being. We have seen a hugely positive move from many barbers in recent years, who have committed to opening up conversations with clients about depression and male health issues – which is beneficial to society as a whole.
“At the NHBF we are constantly looking at ways to support our Members in running profitable businesses, whether they are a barbershop or single operator. We have introduced Business in a Box to provide a step-by-step guide to starting, maintaining and growing. This includes worksheets, templates, and checklist for the requirements of operating a safe and legal business as well as advice and guidance on all aspects of futureproofing and running a successful business.”
