We've spoken to two experts in the know to get their men's hair trend predictions for 2021.From the raddest colours to the hottest cuts Jim Shaw, owner of Toni & Guy Billericay and Alfie James Parr, looked into the trend crystal ball and this is what they predict ...
The key cuts and styles
Short and textured
Short, textured cuts have been on the rise throughout 2020 and going into 2021 this will be one of the most popular cuts amongst men. This looks best when the sides are kept a little shorter than the top and emphasis is made on adding texture to the top of the hair. Jim Shaw
The 70s are back!
Modern day 70s inspired looks will also be a huge staple as seen on the catwalks at Rick Owens, Lanvin, Etro & Gucci. For me personally the skin fade will still have a place but equally it’s the start of a new dawn for consumer men’s hair trends. Alfie James Parr
Military long
This hairstyle takes its inspiration from the classic military cut but with added length on top. The key to this is keeping the sides and back shaved fairly close to the skin and the hair on top being left longer than usual to provide movement and a disconnected look. JS
High top fade
Like a lot of hairstyles and fashion, trends come back around. This is the same for the high top fade, which was popular in the 80s and 90s and is making a comeback for 2021. This look is all about the clean, precise lines with a gradient on the sides. I particularly love this look on those with curly and textured hair and feel this is a very fresh and stylish look that works well to highlight client’s facial features. JS
Long on top
I've loved seeing guys grow their hair in 2020! I predict that guys with longer locks post lockdown will be really keen to keep some of the growth and we'll see cuts created to work with the new-found length. AJP
Slicked to the side or the back
Slicked back styles have been popular for a few years now and look great whether the hair is slicked back off the face or to the side to create drama. This is a really timeless look and can also be modernised when paired with an undercut or instead of having a high shine, using a matte product to create a more natural finish and provide added texture. JS
Disconnected
I predict that one of the most prominent hair trends for men at the minute will continue into 2021. Disconnected cuts provide a contemporary look and can really make a statement. This can be incorporated into many looks, including quiffs, providing a very youthful and on trend look as the hair at the sides contrasts from the hair on top. JS
Men's hair colour predictions from Jim Shaw
Ashy, smoky greys and platinum
These colours are great for men who want to give their style a very fashion-led look. For those who like a more stand out shade, platinums and smoky greys are a great choice. However, for those who don’t want anything too dramatic, a subtle ashy grey tone is a great choice and will work well to compliment the clients cut and provide a trendy finish.
Turquoise and blue
These are to be two of 2021’s most on trend colours and incorporated into hair, these are great for those who like a statement hair colour and who want to stand out from the crowd. These can be worn by themselves or combined into a colour melt to provide an edgy finish. These can be as bright or as subtle as the client likes but it’s definitely dare to be bold for spring 2021!
Orange and peach
Orange and peach tones always make a reappearance at spring time, along with pastel tones of lilac and pink. These are great for blondes who want to add a bit of colour to their look and warmth but it’s definitely not a shade for the faint hearted and is a real head turner!
Natural
For those who prefer a more natural colour, shades of copper brown, golden highlights and bronde shades will also be popular amongst men. These work well on all skin tones and add a warmth to the skin. Highlights in particular are a great choice for clients who want to add a bit of depth and dimension to their hair look.
