Raw Talent Can Change Your Life!

Our Raw Talent competition is now open, and according to last year’s runner up Yasemin Hassan from Joe and Co, London, taking part was a career changer!

“I entered Raw Talent because I wanted to challenge myself, I wanted to intergrate myself into the industry and wanted to showcase a look I was really passionate about.

“I entered a soft 70s glamrock look, because it’s an era for me which I love the idea of gender fluidly and the fashion that comes with it. When you think of long layers and a fringe we automatically think of a woman’s haircut or a feminine style, whereas I wanted to show that this can equally be styled on a man and still look masculine especially as we are moving into a time where we are using gender neutral prices.

“I was so nervous on the day – it was the first big competition I had taken part in – and I wish I had let myself go a little bit as I put tones of pressure on myself. I had no idea what to expect, but everyone was so lovely and supportive and at the end of the day it’s all a learning experience and good thing to just take part in. I might to have won but to be named runner up was amazing. I had made it to the final and that was the most important thing for me. It gave me confidence to enter another competition which I won!”

Entries are now open for this year’s competition with the closing date of 10 June. Entrants must be currently undertaking a formally accredited level 2 barbering qualification, currently registered on the Hair Professional Standards (Barbering) or recently qualified within the previous 12 months.

There are three categories to choose from

Freshers – This category is for students – ideal if you’re working towards a level 2 qualification at a college or training academy

Graduate – This category is for apprentices – ideal for anyone currently on the Hair Professional Standards (Barbering) Apprenticeship

Post-Graduate – This category is for junior barbers – ideal if you’ve recently achieved a level 2 qualification in Barbering (within 12 months)

So what advice does Yasemin have those thinking about entering? “Honestly, just enter! It’s a great experience to showcase what you love most, good to network and a fun day. A lot of the guys from my salon came and my family and the amount of support you get, the vibe and the atmosphere is something I can’t put into words. It’s nerve wrecking, especially the first time you do it because of the pressure, but the feeling afterwards is way worth it!”
