The Best Boyband Hair Trends

Published 07th Aug 2024 by Josie Jackson

Celebrity hairstyles are always highly sought after and, in this piece, we chat to award winning men’s hairdresser and Director of TONI&GUY Billericay, Jim Shaw, about his favourite boyband haircuts and styles that have made a comeback for 2024...

The Bowl Cut

The bowl cut was a huge trend for boybands back in the 90s and was often teamed with curtains. For 2024, we are seeing this cut come back on trend with a more contemporary appearance. Men are wearing the bowl cut in two different ways – either worn sleek and smooth, paired with a blunt, block fringe providing super clean lines or alternatively, paired with a choppy texture and shorter sides for those looking to add more body to their hair whilst giving it an edgy and trendy finish.

The Buzzcut

The buzzcut was a prominent boy band trend, and today, we see many male artists bringing back this look, such as Justin Bieber and Joe Jonas. This is great choice for male clients looking for an incredibly low maintenance haircut that’s uniform in appearance and requires no styling. Today, we are seeing many male clients wearing this cut with a skin fade, which is a great way to introduce them to the buzz cut without taking the plunge and shaving all their hair off in the one sitting.

90s Curtains

Curtains were the boyband trend of the 90s. When we think of 90s curtains, we think about artists such as Aaron Carter, Nick Carter, Brian McFadden, Mark Owen, Stephen Gately, Peter Andre, Robbie Williams and many more. The great thing about this style is that it can be tailored to the client’s hair type, whether they have straight, wavy or curly hair – it has so much versatility and can look flattering on all hair types and textures. For a modern take on the trend, I love adding some soft layers into the hair to provide it with a subtle texture and provide the curtains with a more feathered appearance.

Curls

Springy, defined curls were a favoured look by many boyband members in the 90s (think Justin Timberlake in NSYNC) and today, we are seeing a lot of our male clients coming back to the salon/barbershop looking to embrace their natural curly/wavy hair types. The high-top fade is one trend that looks great when paired with voluminous, diffused curls on top and is the perfect choice for male clients who are looking for a statement hair look that will ensure all eyes are on them.

Blonde Tips and Highlights

In the 90s and early 2000s, many boyband members experimented by adding blonde into their hair look through frosted tips and highlights, pairing these with spikes or a super sleek almost wet finish to enhance the look. Frosted tips and blonde highlights are both back for 2024 for men looking to add some colour to their current hair look but with a more subtle, blended finish. Blonde shades will instead be a lot more toned down, using am cool/ash toner to create a softer, more wearable finish.
