Growing up, summer meant scrapping our school uniform and styling our hair however we liked for a few blissful months. Even as adults, it seems this feeling hasn’t entirely left us, with many clients opting to switch up their look come summer – whether it’s a creative new cut or a bold new colour. Below, Jim Shaw, Director of TONI&GUY Billericay, shares some of his favourite hair colouring techniques that are trending this summer…
Caramel Highlights
Sunkissed hair is always a popular trend over the summer months – not just for female clients, but male clients too. Caramel highlights are a great way for male clients to give their hair an extra glow; they look especially great teamed with a darker, brunette base to give dimension and depth. For those who feel like their hair is lacking life, adding some subtle highlights is a great way to provide hair with radiance and lustre, while also giving the appearance of added texture and movement.
Pastel Toning with Root
For clients looking to embrace a more ethereal hair look without being too daring, pastel hues are a great choice. Most clients will require their hair to be bleached/pre-lightened prior to pastel toning to ensure the colour is as clean and luminous as possible before toning with the desired hue. I particularly love this trend paired with a natural root for a smoky, quirky take. Lavender and ocean blue are two of my favourite shades I like to tone with when creating this look before I go in and paint on a natural dark root for a seamless blend that looks cool and edgy.
Contrasted Colour
Contrasting hair colour has become a huge trend this season, which sees two totally contrasting colours being paired together for more of a statement hair look. Clients may want to keep darkness on the shorter areas of the hair, such as the back and sides, and then opt for a bleached and toned top. For those looking for a more subtle take on this trend, you can add a pop of contrasting colour to one section of their hair, such as their fringe.
Frosted Tips
Frosted tips were a huge trend throughout the 1990s and early 2000s and they are making a comeback for 2024. This involves lighting just the tips of the hair using a freehand method before toning to give the hair a low maintenance yet fun and multidimensional finish. By applying the colour freehand, this will give the hair a softer, gentler appearance and you can also customise the look for your client.
Grey Blending/Salt & Pepper Hair
Grey blending and salt and pepper hair is another popular hair colour trend this summer and it involves blending and enhancing your male clients’ natural grey hairs. Grey hair can lack lustre (as grey hair has fewer melanocytes which means a lack of pigment in the hair) therefore by blending and camouflaging grey hairs by adding in some highlights and lowlights through sections of the hair, you can ensure their hair still has a natural appearance but also has dimension and shine too.
