While it may seem a little early to be talking about Christmas, the festive season always comes around quickly and can catch some business owners out. To help you avoid falling behind or missing out on any potential opportunities, Brandon Messinger, Denman Creative, shares his five top tips on surviving the season in your barbershop...
Clear Communication
I like to let clients know at least two appointments in advance of my Christmas hours as this helps build a sense of urgency and ensures your regular clients aren’t panicking and begging for out of hours appointments.
Maximise Revenue
I work with the team to make sure that we are maximising revenues in the busy period. To do this, I plan colour refreshes and seasonal updates with my colourist and drive lower ticket bookings, such as blow drys, to our junior stylists.
Check Your Kit
You never want your kit to fail you – and definitely not over the busiest season of the year. In the run-up to the festive period, I like to check my kit to see that everything is in working order and if I need to refresh any tools. I always make sure I have a Denman D4 9 Row Styler, as it’s one of my favourite brushes.
Look After Yourself
It’s so typical for hairdressers to exist on coffee and adrenaline during the busy season, but we should do better. This year I have promised myself that I will drink lots of water, meal prep so that I have easy, healthy snacks to keep me going, plus stay off my phone after 9pm to ensure I get a lot of sleep. Fingers crossed!

Sell, Sell, Sell
Retail always ticks up before Christmas; it’s such an easy win. Our salon offers gift vouchers and it’s a good idea to sell stocking fillers such as brushes (Denman has gorgeous colours and prints). Low-cost items are easy to add to the bill and it helps our clients tick off a gift on their Christmas list.
