Get The Ken Look: Master Barber Shares Tips To Go Blonde

Published 14th Jul 2023 by Josie Jackson
Barbie has officially taken over the world, as the big-budget film launches with Margot Robbie taking on the pink carpet at premieres across the globe. And hot on her heels is Ryan Gosling with his perfect depiction of blonde man-doll, Ken.

With caramel highlighted, sun-kissed hair, Ryan Gosling brings the popular 90s style back into fashion. “Ryan Gosling has made Ken fashionable again; he’s walked the pink carpet wearing immaculate pastel-toned suits and highlighted coiffed hair. He’s made it the perfect excuse to add blonde to hair for the summer,” says Murdock London Master Barber Joe Pomper.

“The summertime sees hair naturally sun-kissed with a smattering of lighter tones as we spend more time in the sun. But Ryan Gosling has taken this one step further with blonde highlights and a pop of colour, reminiscent of the popular look from the 1990s.”

Joe’s Tips To Help Clients Embrace Blonde Like Ken:

1.  Always carry out a skin test before colouring any client’s hair.
2. The first thing you and your client need to decide is how blonde they want to go – adding bleached pieces will look more dramatic than honey-toned streaks.
3. An all-over platinum blonde is dramatic but requires aftercare, so make sure your client is aware there’s some maintenance involved between haircuts.
4. Leave roots darker for a modern take on bleached hair. Darker roots will add some extra depth and is a key look for AW23.
5. Blonde hair can be drier so recommend a haircare routine that includes a hydrating shampoo, such as Murdock London Quince & Oatmoss Shampoo and Conditioner.
6. To avoid the plastic-doll feel, make sure there’s plenty of texture in the hair; use a texture paste to add a lived-in feel to the hair.
